The inequality is 3(q + 4) - 5(q - 1) < 5.

Apply distributive property : a(b + c) = ab + ac.

3q + 12 - 5q + 5 < 5

Group like terms.

- 2q + 17 < 5

Subtract 17 from each side.

-2q + 17 - 17 < 5 - 17

- 2q < - 12

Divide each side by negative 2 flip the symbol.

- 2q/- 2 > - 12/- 2

cancel common terms.

q > 6.

The solution set of the inequality is {q\q > 6}.
