A 0.60-m3 gas tank holds 5.0 moles of nitrogen gas (diatomic), at a temperature of 370 K. The atomic mass of nitrogen is 14.0 g/mol and the molecular radius is 3.0 x 10-10 m. The rms speed of the molecules, in SI units, is closest to:

The atomic mass of nitrogen is 14g/mol

                                             =0.014 kg/mol

Calculate the molar mass.

The Molar mass= 0.014kg/mol* 2  (Since nitrogen is a diatomic (2 atoms))

                     = 0.028 kg/mol

Calculate the  mass of a single molecule of nitrogen

= 0.028/(6.023*10^23)

=4.65*10^-26

Calculate the rms value

V{rms}=√3kT/m

          ={(3)(1.38X10^{-23})(370)}/{4.65X10^{{-26}}}}

        =573.9

Nearly 570
