The equation is 62 = 4(x + 4).

6 * 6 = 4(x + 4)

36 = 4(x + 4)

Apply distributive property of addition : a(b + c) = ab + ac.

36 = 4x + 16

subtract 16 from each side.

4x + 16 - 16 = 36 - 16

Apply additive inverse property : a + (- a) = 0.

4x = 20

Divide each side by 4.

4x/4 = 20/4

x = 5.
