5x + 3 = 13

Subtract 3 from each side

5x + 3 -3 = 13 - 3

Simplify

5x = 10

Divide each side by 5

Therefore x = 2.

subtraction property of equality: if a = b the a - c = b - c

subtract 3 from each side
5x+3 -3 =13 -3
5x = 10
divide each side by 5
x = 10 /5 = 2
