Elimination method

8x+y = -17 -------> (1)

-8x+3y = 3  --------> (2)

To eliminate the x value add the equtions (1) and (2).

8x+y = -17

-8x+3y = 3

_________

4y = -14

Divide to each side by 4.

4y/4 = -14/4

y = -7/2

Substitute the y value in (1).

8x-7/2 = -17

Add 7/2 to each side.

8x-7/2+7/2 = -17+7/2

8x = (-34+7)/2

8x = 27/2

Divide to each side by 8.

8x/8 = 27/2*8

x = 27/16

Solution x = 27/16 and y = -7/2.

Typo mistake in 17th line of above solution.

8x  = - 27/2

x  = - 27/16

Solution x  = - 27/16 and y  = -7/2.
