PAGE: 139SET: ExercisesPROBLEM: 1
Please look in your text book for this problem Statement

Subtraction Property of Equality:  For any numbers a, b, and c, if a  =  b, then a - c  =  b - c.

The equation is x + 14 = 25.

Apply subtraction property of equality: Subtract 14 from each side.

x + 14 14 = 25 14

x + 0= 25 14                    (Apply additive inverse property: 1414 = 0)

x = 25 14                         (Apply additive identity property: x + 0 = x)

x = 11                                   (Subtract: 2514 = 11)

Check:

To check the solution, substitute = 11 in original equation.

x + 14 = 25 11 + 14 = 15

25 = 25                               (Add: 11 + 14 = 25)

The statement is true.

Graph the solution on number line.

  • First draw a number line.
  • Mark a dot at 11 on  the number line.

number line diagram for equation x+14=25 solution

The value of x = 11.
