let us assume that 2 y ^2 + y - 8 = 0

2 y ^2 + y - 8 = 0

Compare it to quadratic formula ax^2+bx+c = 0

Then the roots are [-b±√[b^2-4ac]]/2a

a = 2, b = 1, c = -8

y= [-1±√(1-4*2*(-8))]/2*2

y= [-1±√(1+64)]/4

y = [-1±√65]/4

y = [-1±√65]/4

y = (-1+√65)/4and x = (-1-√65)/4

y = (-1+√65)/4and x = (-1-√65)/4

Solutions : y = (-1+√65)/4and y= (-1-√65)/4.
