Elimination method :

The equations are x + y = 75 → ( 1 )

                          x - y = 5  → ( 2 ).

Write the equations (1) and (2) in column form, then add them, to find the value of x.

x + y = 75

x - y = 5

( + )________

2x = 80

⇒ x = 80/2 = 40.

Substitute the value x = 40 in eq((1), and solve for y.

40 + y = 75

y = 75 - 40

⇒ y = 35.

The solution is x = 40 and y = 35.
