Given that

x + y  =  13 --------------> (1)

x - y  =   5 -----------------> (2)

Add Equations (1) and (2)

x + y  =  13

x - y  = 5

2x  =  18

x  =  18/2

9 + y  =  13

y  =  13 - 9
