Substitution method

-x+1 = y ------> (1)

3x-y = -8 ---------> (2)

From (1) substiute the y value in (2).

3x-(-x+1) =-8

3x+x-1 = -8

4x-1 = -8

Add 1 to each sde.

4x-1+1 = -8+1

4x = -7

Divide to each side by 4.

4x/4 = -7/4

x = -7/4

substiute the x value in (1).

-(-7/4)+1 = y

7/4+1 = y

(7+4)/4 = y

y = 11/4

Solution x = -7/4, y = 11/4.
