Retarding force of locomotive

A 20 tonne loco is travelling at a speed of 10km/h( 2.79 m/s). Determine the retarding force of brakes to stop it in 34 metres on level track.

Calculate the acceleration,

v^2-u^2=2as

a=(v^2-u^2)/2s

  =(0^2-2.79^2)/2(34)

  =-0.1145 m/s^2

-----------------------------

Retarding force,

F=ma

  =20000*0.1145

   =2290 N
