|3 + 2 | = 14

Formula |x | = a  ⇒x  = a  or x  = -a.

3x + 2 = 14

Subtract 2 from each side.

3x + 2 - 2 = 14 - 2

3x = 12

Divide each side by 3.

3x /3 = 12/3

x = 4

And 3x + 2 = -14

Subtract 2 from each side.

3x + 2 - 2 = -14 -2

3x  = -16

Divide each side by 3.

3x /3 = -16/3

x = -16/3

Solution x  = 4 or x  = -16/3.
