The function

f(x)  =  [ (5 - 2x) ] - (x/2) ----------------> (1)

f(x)  =  -2 ---------------------------> (2)

Equate Equations (1) and (2)

 [ (5 - 2x) ] - (x/2)   =   -2

 [ (5 - 2x) ]   =   -2 + x/2

 [ (5 - 2x) ]   =   (-4 + x)/2

Squaring on each side

 [ (5 - 2x) ]^2   =  [ (-4 + x)/2 ]^2

 (5 - 2x)   =   (16 + x^2 - 8x) / 4

4 (5 - 2x)   =   (16 + x^2 - 8x)

20 - 8x   =   16 + x^2 - 8x

16 + x^2 - 8x - (20 - 8x)  =  0

16 + x^2 - 8x - 20 + 8x  =  0

x^2 - 4  =  0

x^2  =  4

x  =  ±√ 4

x  =  ± 2

x  =  2    ;    x  =  -2

Answer :

The solutions are x  =  2 and x  =  -2.
