Elimination method :

The equations are

x + 5y = 24           →(1)

8x + 2y = 40        →(2)

To eliminate the x - variable, multiply eq (1) by 8, and write the equations in column form, then subtract them.

8x + 40y = 192

8x + 2y = 40

( - )_____________

38y = 152

y = 152/38

⇒ y = 4.

Substitute y = 4 in eq (1), and solve for x.

x + 5(4) = 24

x = 24 - 20

⇒ x = 4.

Therefore, solution of system is x = 4 and y = 4.
