The path of a comet around the sun follows a branch of a hyperbola. Using a horizontal model, and given that a= 30 million miles and c= 240 million miles, find the standard form of the equation.

Given

a= 30 million miles

c= 240 million miles

Find the value of b

b² =c²-b²

    =240²- 30²

      =56700

Standard form of the equation.

x²/30² -y²/56700 =1
