Given the following data, deteremine the prders with respect to the concentrations of substances A and B in the reaction: A+ B--> Products

[A]initial:           [B] initial:         Time for reaction:

0.10 M             0.10 M                262 s

0.20 M            0.10 M                  131 s

0.30 M            0.10 M                 87 s

0.20 M           0.20 M                 66 s

0.10 M           0.20 M                 131 s

Step 1:

Observe the table.

Rate of the reaction is related to the concentration as , where is the rate of the reaction, is the rate constant, and are molar concentration of the reactants and are the order of the reactants.

If the initial concentration of image is doubled, the time taken to complete the reaction is halved.

The rate of reaction is also doubled.

So the order of the reactant image is image.

Similarly,

If the initial concentration of image is doubled, the time taken to complete the reaction is halved.

The rate of reaction is also doubled.

So the order of the reactant image is image.

Step 2:

Substitute image and image in the rate of change formula.

Rate of concentration is image

image.

Solution:

Orders of the reactants are image and image.

Rate constant  image.
