A 25-kg mass and a 15-kg mass are suspended from either side of a pulley by a massless rope, as shown at right. The pulley is massless and frictionless. The masses are released from rest. 5) What is the tension in the rope after the masses are released?

Step 1:

A 25-kg mass and a 15-kg mass are suspended from either side of a pulley.

Draw the free body diagram for the above situation.

Here the .

Forces affecting m1 : .

Where T is the tension,

            a is acceleration,

g is the acceleration due to gravity.

Find the acceleration : .

Substitute m1 = 25,  m2 = 15.

Acceleration is 2.45 m/s.

Tension can be given as

Substitute m1 = 25 and a = 2.45.

Therefore tension in the string is 183.75 N.

Solution :

Tension in the string is 183.75 N.
