between block and slab:

ms = 0.80    mk = 0.50

between slab and floor:

ms = 0.15    mk = 0.10

A 30-kg slab rests on the floor.  A 10-kg block rests on top of the slab.  The coefficients of friction between the various surfaces are shown to the right of the figure.  The block is pulled by a horizontal force F = 75 N.

9)         What is the acceleration of the 30-kg slab?  Show your work!

Step 1:

Mass of the slab is 30 kg.

Mass of the block is 10 kg.

Coefficient of kinetic friction between slab and floor is 0.10.

Draw the free body diagram for the above situation :

Forces acting on the 10 kg block is .

Forces acting on the 30 kg slab is .

Formula for the acceleration of the slab is image.

Therefore the acceleration of the slab is 0.326 m/s².

Solution :

The acceleration of the slab is 0.326 m/s².
