line xy is the midsegment of trapezoid abcd. find ab if line dc is 98 and line xy is 73.

abcd trepezoid midsegment is xy .

ab parallel to dc and x  is middle of ad  and y  is the middle of bc  then xy  is called the

mid segment of trepezoid.

The mid segment of trepezoid is parallel to both bases.

 Mid segment length is equals to the average of the length of the bases.

In this  case bases are ab and dc.

xy = (ab + dc ) / 2

Substitute the values xy  = 73 and dc = 98.

73 = (ab + 98)/2

73*2 = ab  + 98

146 = ab + 98

146 - 98 = ab

ab  = 48

ab  = 48.
