2 [ 5(4 - a) + 2 (a - 1) ] = 3 - a

2 [ (5×4) - 5a + 2a - 2 ] = 3 - a

2 [ 20 - 3a - 2 ] = 3 - a

2(20) - 2(3a) - 2(2) = 3 - a

40 - 6a - 4 = 3 - a

36 - 6a = 3 - a

Add  (6a - 3)  to each side.

36 - 6a + 6a - 3 = 3 - a + 6a - 3

36 - 3 = 5a

33 = 5a

Divide each side by 5.

5a/5 = 33/5

a = 33/5

Solution : a = 33/5.

2[5(4-a)+2(a-1)] =3-a

Apply distributive property: a(b-c) = ab - ac

2[5*4 - 5*a+ 2*a - 2*1] =3-a

2[20 - 5a+ 2*a - 2] =3-a

2[20 - 3a - 2] =3 - a

Apply commutative property: a + b = b + a

2[20 - 2 - 3a] =3 - a

2[18 - 3a] =3 - a

Apply distributive property: a(b-c) = ab - ac

36 - 6a = 3 - a

Add 6a to each side

36 - 6a + 6a = 3 - a + 6a

36 = 3 + 5a

subtract 3 from each side

33 = 5a

divide each side by 5

a = 33/5 = 6 3/5
