The polynomial  x 4 + 2x 3 - 5x 2+ 3x - 1

x - 1 is a divisor.

By synthetic division

First, write down all the coefficients, and put the zero from x – 1 = 0 (so x = 1) at the left .

Next, carry down the leading coefficient :

Multiply by the potential zero, carry up to the next column, and add down:

Repeat this process:

(x 4 + 2x 3 - 5x 2+ 3x - 1)/(x - 1) then the quotient is x 3 + 3x 2-2x + 1 .
