The inequality is 5(x + 6) < 40.

Apply distributive property : a (b + c) = ab + ac.

5x + 30 < 40

Subtract 30 from each side.

5x + 30 - 30 < 40 - 30

5x  < 10

Divide each side by 5.

x  < 10/5

x  < 2.

The solution set is {x | x < 2}.

Check :

Substitute x = 1 in 5(x + 6) < 40.

5(1 + 6) < 40

5(7) < 40

35 < 40.

The above statement is true, so x < 2 is a solution of 5(x + 6) < 40.
