The trinomial is x2 + 6x  - 16

Multiply first term x2 and last term -16 = -16x2

The correct pair of the terms 8x and -2x multiply to 16x2 and add to 6x.

Replace the middle term 6x with 8x -2x.

= x2 + 8x - 2x  - 16

Group the terms into two pairs.

= (x2 + 8x) + (- 2x  - 16)

Factor out x from the first group  and factor out -2 from the second group.

= x(x + 8) - 2 (x + 8)

Factor out common term x + 8.

= (x + 8)(x - 2)

Factoring of x2 + 6x  - 16 is (x + 8)(x - 2).
