The absolute value equation is | 3x - 5 | = 13.

Write the above equation in the form |ax+b| = c where c = 13 ≥ 0 and it is equivalent to the statement  ax+b = c or ax+b = - c.

case 1 :

3x - 5 = 13.

Add 5 to each side.

3x = 13 + 5 = 18

Divide each side by 3.

⇒ x = 18/3 = 6.

case 2 :

3x - 5 = - 13.

Add 5 to each side.

3x = - 13 + 5 = - 8

Divide each side by 3.

⇒ x = - 8/3.

The solutions are x = - 8/3 and x = 6.
