Known parameters

AB = 10 miles

BC = x miles

CD = (50 -x) miles

Find the length of pipeline using Pythagorean theorem

AC2 = AB2 + BC2

AC2  = 102 + x2

AC = √(100+x2)

Total cost for laying pipeline = Cost for laying pipeline in sea per mile * Length of pipe  + Cost for laying pipeline in land per mile * length of pipe

 = 8000 * √(100+x2) + 2000 * (50-x)

= 2000 * √(1600 + 16x2) + 2000 * (50 -x)

= 2000 (√(1600 + 16x2) + 50 -x))
