y = 2 when x = 1

Direct variation equation is y = kx.

The given numbers form one ratio expressed as y/x = 2/1

To find y, when x = 3

we set up another ratio y/3

By the definition both ratios are equal 2/1 = y/3

Multiple to each side by 3.

2*3 = 3y/3

6 = y

y = 6
