The inequality is 4x < x - 9.

Subtract x from each side.

4x - x < x - 9 - x

3x < - 9

Divid eeach side by 3.

3x/3 < - 9/3

Cancel common terms.

x < - 3.

Solution set is  {x / x : x < - 3}.
