Elimination method

a+8b = 16 --------. (1)

a+2b = -2 -------> (2)

To eliminate the a value, subtract equation (2)  from (1).

a+8b = 16

a+2b = -2

(-)  (-)   (+)

__________

6b = 14

b  = 14/6

b = 7/3

Substitute the b value in (1).

a+8*7/3 = 16

a+56/3 = 16

a+56/3-56/3 = 16-56/3

a = 48-56/3

a = -8/3

Solution a = -8/3, b = 7/3.
