Elimination method :

The equations are 2y = x + 2 → ( 1 )

                      x - 3y = - 5  → ( 2 ).

Write the equation 1 : 2y = x + 2 in standard form of aline equation, i.e, ax + by = c.

2y = x + 2

Subtract x fromeach side.

- x + 2y = 2 → ( 3 )

Write the equations (2) and (3) in column form, then add them, to find the value of y.

x - 3y = - 5

- x + 2y = 2

( + )______________

- y = - 3

⇒ y = 3.

Substitute the value y = 3 in eq((1), and solve for x.

2 * 3 = x + 2

x + 2 = 6

x = 6 - 2

⇒ x = 4.

The solution is x = 4 and y = 3.
